Filming on Washington State Ferries
Just riding a ferry is a wonderful experience. Walk or dive on and you're efficiently whisked around Puget Sound. The views from the boats are spectacular and the ferries, themselves are a fascinating Washington State icon. So, it's no wonder that many photographers and film-makers consider incorporating a ferry ride into their production.
A Really Big Fleet
Washington State Ferries maintain the largest fleet of ferries in the USA, and operate the fourth largest ferry system in the world. A permit may be obtained to film on ferries and within the terminals, but as you can imagine, it takes some planning ahead! The document provided below contains information on the permit process, and relevant fees.
Two Terminals
Whidbey Island has two WSF terminals. From Clinton runs a ferry accessing Mukilteo on the mainland, and from Coupeville ferries sail to Port Townsend on the Olympic Peninsula. These ferries run year round, and are particularly busy in the summer months. Please note that drone filming is not permitted on any WSF vessel or terminal property due to the potential distraction hazard is presents to vessel Captains and the potential safety risk to traveling passengers.
