With a B.S. in Agriculture from The Ohio State University and 45 years of experience in fruit horticulture\, Dan shares practical\, easy-to-apply guidance on planting\, pruning\, and maintaining healthy\, productive trees. \n\n\n\nJanuary 24\, 2026 | Fruit Tree Selection and Care | 10:00am – 12:30pm\n\n\n\nThe introductory class on which the other classes build. Addresses cultivar selection\, rootstocks\, plant needs\, diseases and pests\, fertilizing\, and other important foundations of fruit horticulture.

\n\n\n\nAddresses the science of grafting\, followed by a hands-on bench grafting lab (apple). Everyone goes home with their grafted tree. Bring your grafting knife if you have one. We provide the rootstock\, scion wood\, and necessary tools and materials.

Soil is the basis for much of plant agriculture. Knowing your soil is a little bit like knowing how your engine works when you drive a car\, or knowing a little about food science when you cook. Our focus in this class is to give you a basic understanding of key elements of soil science that bear directly on the health of your plants\, and what you can do about it.

Fresh figs are delicious\, and beneficial for your health. And fig trees produce very well on many sites on Whidbey Island.
However\, online information and even nursery catalogs are not always accurate. We will give you the information you need to decide if your site can reliably grow figs\, which cultivars we’ve cropped here\, which ones we are still testing\, and which to avoid. And we’ll show you how to reliably propagate your own trees. The class is made up of a 1 hour slideshow class with questions\, followed by an hour of hands-on propagation. You’ll go home with your own\, self-propagated tree.

This year’s theme\, “Tracing Life through the Salish Sea\,” explores the intricate web of relationships that connect species\, habitats\, and communities throughout this unique marine ecosystem. The 2026 program promises something for everyone\, including an expanded offering of expert-led sessions\, inspirational keynote speakers and fascinating field locations.  \n\n\n\nAmong the offerings:\n\n\n\n\nA selection of classes that explore the latest research and case studies around topics including sea birds\, river otters\, geology\, butterflies\, salmon and conservation case studies\n\n\n\nAn opening presentation on orca eco-cultures by Dr. Florian Grainer\, a well-known wildlife filmmaker and executive director of Sound Water Stewards.\n\n\n\nA closing speech by environmental author and educator Elin Kelsey\, PhD\, who will speak on “How to be Hopeful: Empowering Practices to Overcome Despair and Act for Climate Justice.”\n\n\n\nAn opportunity to meet and network with representatives from local environmental and community groups.\n\n\n\nOptional field trips to locations around Whidbey and Camano islands\, including the newly preserved Keystone Farm and Forest property.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration deadline: Jan. 31 \n\n\n\n$70 Ticket: Each ticket includes admission to two Keynote Speakers + two elective classes. Playing an eclectic mix of pop\, rock\, blues\, country\, and jazz\, they’ll get you moving to the beat. \n\n\n\nDon’t forget to come decked out in your best Mardi Gras finery! The evening fun includes a costume contest with prizes for Best in Show\, Most Comical\, Best Child Costume\, and Best Mask. Beads do not count as a costume\, but you can grab some free at the door. \n\n\n\nBeer\, wine\, and non-alcoholic beverages will be for sale. Laissez les bons temps rouler! (the Mardi Gras party call of “let the good times roll”). \n\n\n\nMardi Gras has a long history in the US\, with the first New Orleans Mardi Gras parade in 1837. Goosefoot has brought the party to Whidbey Island since 2014.
