Soil is the basis for much of plant agriculture. Knowing your soil is a little bit like knowing how your engine works when you drive a car\, or knowing a little about food science when you cook. Our focus in this class is to give you a basic understanding of key elements of soil science that bear directly on the health of your plants\, and what you can do about it.

Fresh figs are delicious\, and beneficial for your health. And fig trees produce very well on many sites on Whidbey Island.
However\, online information and even nursery catalogs are not always accurate. We will give you the information you need to decide if your site can reliably grow figs\, which cultivars we’ve cropped here\, which ones we are still testing\, and which to avoid. And we’ll show you how to reliably propagate your own trees. The class is made up of a 1 hour slideshow class with questions\, followed by an hour of hands-on propagation. You’ll go home with your own\, self-propagated tree.

It is recommended you bring your own binoculars and/or scopes\, though there will be a few on hand to borrow.  \n\n\n\nA Discover Pass or day permit is required for each vehicle. \n\n\n\nLocation: West Beach -Deception Pass State Park 41229 State Route 20 Oak Harbor\, WA\, 98277Whether arriving from the north or south on SR20\, you will come to a stoplight at the bottom of a hill. Turn west into the main park entrance. Drive past the welcome station and follow along the winding road until you reach a stop sign\, then turn left. Take this road all the way down to the end\, which will lead you to the West Beach parking lot. Restrooms are available at this location. The sit begins at high tide when the diving birds should be closer to shore. We will scan Holmes Harbor for Goldeneyes\, Scoters\, Buffleheads\, Double-crested Cormorants and Horned Grebes. On the beach we will watch for Song Sparrows and in the grass Dark-eyed Juncos and White-crowned Sparrows. Less likely possibilities include early arriving Caspian Terns or Osprey and the ever unpredictable (but common in this part of Freeland) Bushtits. \n\n\n\nCome for five minutes or the full two hours. Viewing will be from the picnic table in the grassy area between the kitchen shelter and the beach. A paved path leads from the paved parking lot to the first picnic table and then there are about 50 feet of flat short grass to get to the second picnic table. Chairs will also be available for attendees. A scope will be provided\, as well as loaner binoculars and field guides for use during the event.  \n\n\n\nFamilies with young children are encouraged to attend. DESCRIPTION:Sea Glass Float Scavenger Hunt and Scoop | March 23rd – 28th\n\n\n\nThe Greater Freeland Sea Float Scoop is a one-of-a-kind community event bringing fun\, friendly competition\, and a little bit of island adventure to Freeland Park! \n\n\n\nHosted by the Greater Freeland Chamber of Commerce and our friends at Callahan’s FireHouse\, this exciting event invites participants to scavenge and hunt for hundreds of specialty\, handcrafted glass Sea Floats\, custom made by Callahan’s FireHouse just for this event! Best of all? It’s completely FREE to participate and attend! \n\n\n\nHere’s How It Works\n\n\n\nThe main event (The Sea Float Scoop) takes place on Saturday\, March 28th at Freeland Park!  \n\n\n\nParticipants will have the opportunity to scavenge and hunt for hundreds of specialty\, handcrafted glass Sea Floats made by Callahan’s FireHouse! On event day\, Freeland Park & Beach will open for participants during three special one-hour waves: \n\n\n\nFirst Wave at 10:00am | Second Wave at 11:15 | Third Wave at 12:30pm \n\n\n\nAs the tide goes out\, even more shoreline and hidden spaces will be revealed — meaning each wave offers new opportunities to explore and discover! In between waves\, volunteers will hide hundreds of floats… but they won’t be easy to spot. If you’re observant\, and a little lucky\, you just might head home with one of these beautiful handcrafted treasures!  \n\n\n\nA Few Important Event Guidelines\n\n\n\n\nParticipants may join as many waves as they would like!\n\n\n\nHowever\, each participant is eligible to win only one Sea Float per person.\n\n\n\nNo one is guaranteed to find a float — so keep your eyes sharp and your competitive spirit high!\n\n\n\nSea Floats will be hidden within clearly marked event boundaries.\n\n\n\nAll participants must follow event staff instructions and safety guidelines.\n\n\n\nThis is a family-friendly event — all ages are welcome!\n\n\n\n\nReady to Scoop?\n\n\n\nTo fill out your free registration CLICK HERE!Mark your calendar for March 28\, 2026 and join us at Freeland Park for the Greater Freeland SeaFloat Scoop! Each clue will guide you closer to hidden handcrafted glass Wish Stones placed around Freeland. Two guards patrolling the grounds of Elsinore Castle meet for an after-shift beverage to compare notes on Shakespeare’s arguably most famous work. Featuring dazzling performances of the seven iconic Hamlet monologues\, clever contemporary comedic banter\, and even a fight scene\, this 45-minute show will delight and inform even the newest theatergoer. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: This event will take place at various venues in Clinton\, Langley\, Freeland\, Coupeville and Oak Harbor.
