Earth and Ocean Month 2023

Caring for Our Common Home

On Whidbey Island, Earth Day has expanded to encompass the entire month of April. Collectively known as Whidbey Earth and Ocean Month, there is a month's worth of activities that appeal to a wide range of interests, ages, and backgrounds.

This month is in the spirit of the first Earth Day and what was then called an environmental "teach-in" designed to share knowledge and build awareness of the environmental issues plaguing our planet.

Taking things further, many of the activities this month invite us all to get outside and experience nature.  For those ready to get something done, there are clean-ups and weed round-ups.

Yes, many of these events also happen outside of April.  But devoting an entire month to focus on our planet helps us all do better the other 11 months of the year.

Most events are free and open to everyone. A complete schedule is available at www.whidbeyearthday.org

Maybe Earth should
be called Ocean, instead.
