A Backcountry Drive to Maxwelton Beach

A Backcountry Drive to Maxwelton Beach

Drives on Whidbey and Camano Islands are a chance to explore the rich tapestry of a peaceful rural lifestyle in a place that, because it is cut off from the mainland, has a special quirky charm. One such drive takes you through the hills of South Whidbey to Maxwelton Beach.

At the traffic light at Ken’s Corner, turn south onto Cultus Bay Road, where you are immediately surrounded either by tall trees or farmland.

Keep an eye out for farm stands offering fresh produce and cut flowers. Chances are good that they were harvested the same day you bought them. Also, look for artist studios that are often open on weekends or by appointment. But, most of all, just enjoy the ambiance of a country drive.

After driving about four miles, Cultus Bay Road intersects with Bailey Road. Turn west on Bailey Road and drive six-tenths of a mile to Scatchet Head Road. Follow it to Swede Hill Road. Follow that road down a dramatic hill into the small community of Maxwelton. Turn left on Maxwelton and park at Dave Mackie Park. It’s a peaceful county park with barbecues, picnic benches, and a beautiful view of Puget Sound.
