Join us on the First Street Hill, Langley: Things go downhill pretty fast at Langley’s Soup Box Derby, but that’s the idea. Community members build nonmotorized small… whatevers and race them downhill. It’s a fun summer’s end release. Come check out the wacky designs and costumes that participants will wear in the wildest race on the island. And if you’re up for it, enter the race along with your friends.

The Langley Soup Box Derby, brought to you by LMSA and the Langley Community Club, has been a crowd-pleasing event for more than 50 years. Part engineering feat, part costume party, and entirely “Langley,” the Derby brings racers and fans together for high-speed hijinks on FirstStreet Hill.

What is the Soup Box Derby?
The Soup Box Derby was started in 1972 by a group of people who worked at the Soup Coop, a favorite restaurant at First and Anthes. Participants in the Derby race home-made non-motorized gravity cars in competitive heats down First Street. Every race is a nail-biter, but it’s all for fun and bragging rights.

Event Highlights
The Race: Watch as local daredevils race down First Street in wild and whacky derby cars.

The Cars: Creativity is just as important as velocity; notable designs have included a pirate ship, a kayak, a wine barrel, a banana and an outhouse.
The Costumes: It’s not just the cars that look good; racers go all-out with creative themes and get-ups!
The Fans: Residents, visitors and sponsors line the streets to cheer on their favorite racers.
The Finish Line: One-of-a-kind trophies, awards and honors wrap up the event at the end of the Derby.

This year’s race is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12th at 10:00am sharp!
(Please note, in case of rain, the Derby will be postponed or rescheduled to Sunday, Sept. 13th, 10:00 AM. If rain continues on the 13th, the Derby will be cancelled.)
