Island Hopper

By Laura Hilton

In most counties, all the land is connected, but for Whidbey and Camano Islands, it’s the embrace of the Salish Sea that holds us in community. Both islands can boast of gorgeous natural scenery, a laidback culture, and plenty of creative residents. We can even see each other from many points! But we haven’t shared a ferry service since the construction of Deception Pass Bridge in the 1930s, which leaves us with two routes to connect our islands.

If you’re in a rush, you can take I-5 for most of the journey between the bridge at Stanwood and the ferry at Mukilteo. But why are you rushing between the islands? The far more scenic route is to drive “over the top.” There are no ferry lines to contend with this way either, just easy driving through amazing scenery.

Not only will you get the chance to drive across the stunning Deception Pass Bridge this way, but you’ll also pass over two other islands! No boats are required, and you may not even realize when you’ve made it across, but drive over lovely Fidalgo Island to connect your route between North Whidbey and the mainland. Then, later on you’ll drive across the fertile farmland of Fir Island between the forks of the Skagit River. Puget Sound cuts grooves all through this area that make it hard to know exactly what landmass you’re on, but you won’t mind when surrounded by such beauty.

In the spring, the drive between Whidbey and Camano Islands takes you through the heart of Skagit County’s Tulip Festival.

In the winter, geese from as far away as Siberia make themselves at home in the farm fields of the northern part of Puget Sound.

Make a mini road trip of it and build this route into your visit. Enjoy the full experience of both islands in one trip! Whether you’re going from Camano to Whidbey or vice versa, tiptoeing through tulip country will enhance your visit and lead you to explore further. If this trip whets your appetite for more, remember that Whidbey Island is a designated Scenic Isle Way and makes up the westernmost stretch of the famed Cascade Loop. Camano Island is a suggested side trip to that beloved route and a great way to launch your statewide travels!

Do you want to visit both Whidbey and Camano Islands in a single three-day trip? Here’s what to see and where to go.
