A Country Drive: Maxwelton to Bayview

The residential hamlet of Maxwelton, nearly at the southern tip of Whidbey Island, is a peaceful place to watch the waves or have a picnic. It’s also the starting point for our next country drive, taking you through the back roads to the main highway at Bayview.

Why drive the backcountry roads? Doing so is a way to get a more authentic feel for Whidbey and Camano Islands. You see the small home-based businesses, picturesque farms, and majestic fir and cedar trees lining the roadway. It’s hard to imagine that from some places on Whidbey, you can actually see Seattle’s downtown skyline.

From Maxwelton, drive a little more than a mile to Sills Road and turn left. Your drive twists and turns along a wooded ridge for nearly two miles before the intersection with Ewing Rd. Ewing becomes Bayview Road which continues past farms and forests. After two miles of scenery, you are back at the highway. Cross the highway to Bayview where there are restaurants and shops.
