The Whidbey Art Gallery in Langley is happy to feature in July Diane Baxter (3D), ceramicist, and Michelyn Gjurasic (2D), pastels.
Diane Baxter – BIO
I grew up here in the NW and spent many years in Alaska. I live in Clinton full time now. I have always been drawn to the simple but complex beauty of the natural world, such as the color and texture of rocks, plants and the raw earth, as well as how the sand looks when the tide goes out or the variations in tree bark.
Clay has been my main and favorite medium, but in the past few years, I have branched out to include other organic materials. I have been working in the wabi-sabi style years before I knew what it meant. It is the Japanese concept of finding the beauty in imperfection and impermanence, especially in nature.Â
The interior landscapes of my mind and heart are a big part of my work.
Michelyn Gjurasic – BIO
Michelyn Gjurasic was literally dragged into her first art class when her 5-year-old daughter’s art teacher insisted on filling an empty seat. Initially fearful, Michelyn’s confidence blossomed quickly as she became familiar with both soft and oil pastels. Â
Since that day 22 years ago, Michelyn has grown devoted to painting landscapes and portraits with soft pastels, the purest and most durable of all media. The intense saturation of color reflects the intensity of emotion with which Michelyn expresses herself and her subjects.
As a wife and mother of three, Michelyn enjoys the singularity of focus that painting requires. She maintains a life coaching practice that helps women turn their unexpressed emotions into language and form. Her website is www.Michelyn.com.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My passion for life is matched by the intensity of pastels, which is the purest medium available.Â
I am an alchemist in life and in art, combining passion, beauty, and emotion with the structural rules of pastel and paper, then freezing them in time with the paintings before you.
