The Haller House is mostly hidden by trees, and the morning sun can only reach a solitary upper-story window.

Haller House

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

The historic Haller House could be considered the birthplace of Coupeville’s downtown. Raphael Brunn established the area’s first commercial maritime business in 1859, building a cabin and general store on the site, plus a wharf and warehouse just below. Colonel Granville Haller bought the operation in 1866 and built a grand home off the front of the modest cabin.

An Army officer in the early Washington Territory, Haller bore witness to the tumultuous Treaty Era of the 1850s and the “Pig War” boundary dispute with Great Britain. Now under the care of Historic Whidbey, this beautiful house will be transformed into a heritage center featuring interpretive history exhibits, a Victorian soda fountain and period mercantile store in the very same cabin that Brunn built. Located at 1 Front Street NE, Coupeville.
