Friends of Camano Island Parks (FOCIP) hosts public Winter-Spring Walks on Camano and Whidbey Island State Park trails each first Saturday through June.
All walks begin at 9:45 AM and finish by noon, with a moderate pace suitable for both adults and children. Walks occur rain or shine but are canceled in case of snow or high winds. Participants should dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes or boots. No pass is required for walks scheduled in the State Park. For the safety of all participants, dogs are not allowed.
Schedule (all walks meet at 9:45am)
March 7th | Cama Beach to Camano Island State Park | Meet at 9:45 AM at Ivy Way Trailhead off of Dry Lake Road. You can access Dry Lake Road from Elger Bay or Monticello Roads. Walk from the trailhead parking area to the South Beach of Camano Island State Park along the Cross Island and West Rim trails enjoying downhill and level terrains with great views. The walk is about 3.2 miles. Shuttle service will be available to return participants to the trailhead. No state park Discover Pass is required.
April 4th | Four Springs Lake Preserve | Meet at 9:45 AM at the parking area of Four Springs. Proceed from East or West Camano Drive and turn onto Camano Hill Road. Turn north onto Lewis Lane. A FOCIP Walk sign will designate Lewis Lane. See this beautiful preserve with a walk on the Perimeter Trail including the wetland trail. The Perimeter Trail includes two 50 ft fairly steep hills with benches for resting at the top. The distance of the walk is approximately 2 miles. Hopefully, the skunk cabbage will be in bloom! A peek at the day rental Four Spring House and Meadow Room and Barn will be available if there is no rental scheduled that day.
May 2nd | Iverson Spit Preserve; Kristoferson Creek Habitat, English Boom Historical Park | Participants should arrive at Iverson Spit at 9:45 AM. Iverson is accessed from East Camano Drive, east on Russell Road, south on Sunrise Road to Iverson Beach Road. Look for the FOCIP Walk signs. The parking area is at the north end past the beach houses. A short level walk will include views of Port Susan and a beaver activity area and the “Hobbit Trail.” Drivers will caravan to Kristoferson Creek Habitat a short distance away, for a brief visit. The caravan of cars will then move to English Boom Historical Park. The walk at English Boom is about 1 mile in length on a marsh trail along Skagit Bay. Mt. Baker view and interpretive boards are some of the special features of this historical park.
June 6th | Barnum Point County Park | This newest Island County Park, has been fully open for 7 years. The walk is about 3.3 miles. Great views, wetlands, viewing platforms and benches fill this trail experiences. A large parking lot allows for many visitors and there will be extra parking at the Island County workshop and storage areas. Three accesses to the beach exist, one down a beach road at the East end of the trail system and two more level approaches at the old inn site and the West end of the trail system at Triangle Cove. Meet at 9:45 a.m. at the new parking area located at the end of Sunrise Road. (East Camano Road to Russell Road to Sunrise Road). Look for the FOCIP Walk signs.
